AI systems that pursue a goal autonomously — planning, using tools, and taking multi-step actions — rather than just responding to a single prompt.

Widely called the defining AI trend of 2026, as the field moves from chatbots and copilots to systems that execute work end to end. Coding agents that edit repos and run tests are the most mature example today.
